Keratosis pilaris

This skin condition is characterized by small reddish spots and bumps and is often referred to as “Chicken Skin”.

Keratosis Pilaris is a genetic condition caused by abnormal keratinization of the hair follicles within the epidermis. Keratin protects the skin from harmful substances and infections, it is an essential substance for regulating, protection and the health of the skin outer surface. However, overproduction can lead to keratinization, resulting in the development of reddish colored spots and bumps over the skin surface.

What are the indicators of Keratosis Pilaris?
Excessive presence of reddish spots and bumps may be an indication that one is suffering from Keratosis Pilaris, the condition is often referred to as “Chicken Skin”. It is most common over the chin and on the back sides of the upper arm, front of the thighs and buttocks. It is often most prevalent during the winter and may often improve in the summer. Those suffering from excessively dry skin are often more prone to Keratosis Pilaris.

How normal is Keratosis Pilaris?
Keratosis Pilaris is a common hereditary condition amongst both men and women alike, and does not appear to be age dependent. Approximately 50% of the young experience in some degree the condition while approximately 40% of adults do. The condition is seen to diminish with age, but is generally most prevalent during youth, it is a relatively common condition, and many may experience the condition in some degree throughout life.

How to treat Keratosis Pilaris?
The condition is in no way serious and while there are no cures for the condition, proper treatment with the correct remedies will reduce the accumulation of keratin around the hair follicles. It is important to treat the condition regularly to achieve good results as the condition will re-appear with the termination of treatment.

The most commonly recommended creams for good treatment contain Glycolic Acid, Mandelic Acid, Lactic Acid and Polyhydroksy Acid (PHA-acid).
